Building a Space Where Art Lives
Finding the Light in the Shadow
For many, art is a hobby or a livelihood. No matter where we stand, we can agree that art is a form of self-expression, communication, and a way to process emotions, understand the world, and connect with others through shared experiences. It carries passion, inspiration, and a story crafted by our hands, guided by our hearts, and illuminated by our creativity.
The foundation of Art is Lit was forged during a period of a challenging time. Working as a Ward Clerk, I witnessed firsthand the immense courage and daily sacrifice of frontline healthcare professionals. This environment a space of profound vulnerability and unwavering dedication instilled in me a deep appreciation for the human capacity for resilience and compassion.
Like many, I was worried, and the fear of losing my loved ones and my team was ever-present, matched only by the pain and despair on the other side of the line from families unable to see their loved ones for the last time. I can vividly recall the agony of existing within those walls. The stark contrast was heartbreaking: the space that once buzzed with life, banter, and action became a place quietly painful and filled with dread, reflecting the exhausted despair of colleagues who had given everything. Then a slight noise abruptly cut the silence, and solitary last breaths often echoed through those corridors.
The constant worry and emotional weight I experienced eventually led me to an escape. As the rules relaxed, traveling and visiting beautiful spaces like the Sagrada FamÃlia and the Louvre, I felt it deeply: creativity is the universal language that connects us. It tells stories that words never could, often echoing lessons from ancient civilizations and cultures.
After that trip, Art classes, the English countryside, the near brook, and especially Hampstead Heath became my silent retreat, my necessary light, and my path to healing. It became clear to me that expressing ourselves through many artistic avenues can aid recovery and foster connection within.
The Barrier to Entry for New Creators
As I turned my personal passion into practice, friends encouraged me to share and sell my work. In exploring these avenues, I quickly uncovered a systemic problem that affects countless emerging artists: the crushing reality of the beginner's market.
The barriers were clear and immediate:
- High Commission Fees — unjustly diminishing the reward for creative labor.
- The Shadow of Doubt — the isolation and self-doubt that whisper, "Is my art even good enough to compete with established brands?"
I realized this struggle was not unique to me; it was the defining challenge for any creator attempting to transition from passion to profession.

" The joy of making shouldn't come with the stress of selling."
Our Commitment: Building a Platform on Equity and Opportunity
This insight led to the creation of Art is Lit. I felt there needed to be a platform where artists are met with equitable support, not barriers. With small resources and the encouragement of my husband and friends I built a marketplace designed with the artist at its heart.
Art is Lit is founded on the principles of community and equitable opportunity. Our goal is to ensure that your passion can thrive without being overshadowed by financial complexity. This commitment is why we maintain a low commission structure, to provide a sustainable starting point for every emerging artist and to keep the site running.
Our Mission: Empowerment.
We aim to empower emerging artists by removing market barriers, fostering a supportive community, and helping every art lover discover a piece that truly connects with them and resonates.
Art is Lit is still a work in progress and a learning curve, and I hope we can all grow together. I'm only an email away if you need any help.
Yours Sincerely,
Lana
